Woodwork
Darryl York III is the artist and craftsman behind Village Woodworking. Born and raised in North Omaha, he lives as the fruit of the proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” As a third-generation Omahan, Darryl stands with pride on the shoulders of his ancestors who made their way to Omaha years ago—an inheritance of resilience, love, and belonging that heavily influences his work.
An alumnus of Jesuit Academy and Creighton Preparatory School, Darryl carries Jesuit values into his artwork and lived experience: cura personalis (care for the whole person) and magis (the call toward “more,” or “greater”). While studying at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science and inadvertently discovered a deep love for the spiritualism present in fine woodworking—seeking the quiet discipline, patience, and honesty of the material.
Today, Darryl blends technological fluency with practiced respect for time-honored techniques of fine woodworking. Working most often with locally sourced hardwoods, he designs and builds one-of-a-kind fine-furniture— on the very same street that his village has always enjoyed in the heart of the city they all call home. Above all, he is grateful to tell his story, and the story of his community, through the vessel of woodcraft.
