I am a multihyphenate artist in every sense of the word. I am a DJ, fiber artist (by way of hair), sculptor, photographer, and illustrator. I am interested in black diasporic sounds, movements, and patterns, as well as the black female form. In all these modes of expression, the core driving factor and inspiration comes from my experience in the world, from a black, lesbian, immigrant perspective. In my practice, I am often coming back to the inherent political nature of my existence: why is black hair controversial? How can I convey feeling through music? How can I bring community together? How can I honor my ancestry and lineage? When I do my hair sculptures and creative braid designs, I am reminded of all who came before me and set the standard. When I am illustrating a portrait, I am drawn to the innate beauty of the black feminine mystique. When I am curating an event, I am thinking about how I can bring together black folk from all walks of life to the dancefloor. All these thoughts and questions dance across my mind when I create and i allow them to manifest organically within all of my chosen modes of media.
